Dr. Cole continued his professional career in the Air Force for nine more years, serving tours of duty as the Director of Psychological Health at the 18th Medical Group’s Mental Health Clinic at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, then as an embedded operational psychologist with the 737th Training Group at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, Texas, and fulfilling his last assignment on active duty as the flight commander for the 42nd Medical Group’s Mental Health Clinic at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

In meeting with Dr. Cole, people often describe him as having a warm, calming presence, which for many people leaves them feeling more safe and empowered to venture into vulnerable, anxiety-provoking, and painful places. Clinically, Dr. Cole's approach is a scientifically grounded, deliberately relational psychodynamic style that pays special attention to the thoughts and feelings that arise in the therapy room. More simply put, this means that his treatment approach appreciates and pays attention to how our present moment difficulties are significantly influenced by the past (especially the dynamics in our significant relationships), factors outside of our immediate awareness, and longstanding patterns in how we think, feel, behave and relate to ourselves and others. Moreover, Dr. Cole believes healing, positive change, and growth is achieved most effectively through the unique vehicle of the therapy relationship, where stand-alone techniques and interventions may otherwise fall flat or only have a short-lasting effect.
